Locked Keys in Car? Here’s What to Do

How Do You Unlock Your Car with Keys Locked Inside

The movie Long Weekend was scary, but do you know what’s even more terrifying?

Locked key in your car.

Have you ever found yourself locked out of your car? If so, you know how frustrating it can be. You’re on the road, in traffic or just out running errands when suddenly your car locks and you realise that you have no way to open it.

This can be a real headache. It’s not just the inconvenience of it, but also the feeling of helplessness that you have as you stand there, looking at your car, knowing that it’s locked, and you have no way to get inside.

Have no fear, Apex Locksmiths is here with some helpful tips on what to do if you find yourself in such a situation.

How Do You Unlock Your Car with Keys Locked Inside

We all have a story or two about locking our keys in the car. Sometimes it happens when we’re rushing out the door; other times, it’s because we’re focused on something else and forget to lock the doors in the first place. No matter what your reason, though, it can be a serious pain in the butt.

But don’t worry: There are a few different ways to get those keys back out—and we’ll go over them all here!

1. Stay Calm and Consider Your Options

First things first: Remain calm and try not to panic. It is never helpful when trying to solve problems—it only makes things worse.

You need to think about what options are available to you and how long it could take for someone else to along who might be able to help unlock your car door for you. Once you’ve collected your thoughts, it’s time to evaluate the situation.

  • Is it an emergency?
  • Are you willing to wait for help?
  • Can you remember where you hid the spare key?

Recheck your pockets and purse. Also, try to look for any unlocked entry to your car.

2. Try to Unlock the Door Yourself

If your car has power windows or doors, you can open them from inside with a coat hanger or other thin metal piece of wire to poke at the lock and open it. You’ll need to find something thin and sturdy enough to fit into the gap between door and frame, but not so thick that it will scratch up the door when inserted.

Push firmly until you hear a click—that’s when it has broken through the lock mechanism and unlocked itself! If this doesn’t work or you don’t have power windows or doors, try reaching through an open window or sunroof with a coat hanger and pulling down on the door handle until it unlocks itself.

3. Figure Out if You Have Roadside Assistance

Getting locked out of your car is not a problem if you have roadside assistance covered by your insurance policy. All you need to do is call the emergency hotline. You’ll need to provide them with your name, address, license plate number, and phone number so they can contact you as soon as possible. They will come unlock your car for you so that you can get back on the road.

Note that some car insurance companies don’t include roadside assistance in their services. Make sure to inquire about your policy particulars and keep the roadside assistance number stored in your phone.

4. Call a Professional Locksmith

If you’re lucky enough to have a dealer nearby, you may be able to get help from them. However, they tend to be busy with new and used car sales and service appointments, so they may not be able to assist with locked doors or windows. If you don’t have a dealer nearby, or if the dealer is too busy to help you right away, it’s best to call a professional locksmith instead.

How Do You Unlock a Car Without a Key

If you’re looking to save time and money, you can always do it yourself. Here are some hacks to unlock your car without a key:

1. Use a coat hanger or metal wire

You’ll need a coat hanger or metal wire that’s long enough to reach the other side of the window. Place one end in the door handle and push it up until it reaches the latch. Once you feel movement, twist the handle until it unlocks.

2. Use a quarter

You probably have a bunch of quarters lying around somewhere, so why not try using one? Simply insert the quarter into the lock and turn it back and forth until you hear it click open.

3. Use an old credit card

If you don’t have a dollar bill or quarters on hand, try using an old credit card instead!

If your car has an old-school style locking mechanism, this could work. Carefully slide it in between the door and frame until you feel it pop open!

4. Use a screwdriver or knife

If you don’t have any tools handy, try using a screwdriver or knife to open your door. Place one end into the crack between the door and frame, then pry upward until you feel it hit the lock mechanism inside. Push down with force and twist counterclockwise until it unlocks.

5. Use a paperclip

Start by inserting one end of a paperclip into the hole where your key goes in; then use your other hand to push up on that end while pulling down on the other end with your teeth (you may have to bend it first). You should hear some clicking noises coming from inside your car as this happens—that means it’s working!
